Each year, San Diego County teachers are invited to apply for the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute (CWTI) program. This program, designed to prepare fifth grade teachers to teach early American history, begins with an intensive one-week institute. Teachers will study in Williamsburg, the restored capital city of eighteenth-century Virginia, and at nearby Jamestown, and Yorktown. Program instruction and historical interpretation will be provided by resident historians and educators from Colonial Williamsburg.
The CW program has been touted as the best professional development experience by our participating teachers! The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation provides all transportation, room, and board for each selected participant. In return, graduates of the program return to their classrooms with advanced knowledge and skills, and a renewed passion and enthusiasm for teaching history to their students. All teachers are expected to develop a lesson/project based on their week in Williamsburg, teach their lesson in the classroom with their students, present their lesson at one of our local Convocations, and submit their work for posting on the San Diego Colonial Williamsburg website.
