The General Education Development (GED) is a high school
equivalency examination for students who are 18-years-old and have not
completed the formal requirements for a high school diploma. Under
certain circumstances, a 17-year-old may qualify.
The GED test at the San Diego County Office of Education is
offered only to our Momentum Learning students. All
others interested in taking the GED should contact their nearest adult
The exam covers five areas writing skills, social studies, science, reading skills and mathematics.
To pass the GED test in California, if you have taken the English-language version, you must receive a standard score of at least 410 on
each of the five GED subtests and an average standard score of 450 or
higher. For the Spanish-language version, you must receive a standard
score of at least 40 on each of the five GED subtests and an average
standard score of 45 or higher.
Those not obtaining passing scores may be retested in the subject they failed. Before retesting, a candidate must wait four months or complete a GED preparation review class and provide the testing center with practice test scores of 45 or above.
Upon passing the GED, a certificate will be issued to the
student. This will enable the student to qualify for civil service
positions, gain admission to community colleges that recognize the
certificate, and enroll in special training/education programs of the

- Fee is $75.00, payable to "C.S.S.F."(County Schools Service Fund).
- Fee is $15.00 for retest of each section of the test.
- For fee waiver, contact your Momentum Learning principal.
Enroll prior to testing. For JCCS students, all registration forms and fees should be in the Momentum Learning GED Testing Center one week
prior to testing. Student will not be admitted to testing if they are
not registered. Registration will not be permitted on the day of
Bring a picture ID card such as a driver's license or military ID. Please make sure student has a picture ID before
testing date or he/she will not be permitted in the testing room. If
your student does not have the ID card, please make an appointment with
the Teacher Service Center at 858-571-7260 to have one made.
Bring Social Security card. (This is to verify the number.)
Recommended procedures to enroll to take the GED:
- Take predictor test. (Steck-Vaughn predictor or TABE Complete
Battery). All students must be pre-tested before taking GED Test. This
is to insure that the student is successful in passing the test. GED
Practice Test are available at the Teacher Service Center, 858-571-7260.
- If needed, enroll in a GED preparation class.
- Request GED Information from Pupil Services.
