Call on the San Diego County Office of Education’s English Language Arts and Literacy team to help you achieve a systemic lift of student learning through ELA/literacy instruction. We can help you design your district- or school-wide literacy plan and can provide evidence-based professional learning and coaching for coaches and teacher teams. Our customized services are designed to build capacity with administrators and teachers to ensure that each and every student has equitable opportunities to access high quality ELA/literacy instruction so that they:

  • Become broadly literate
  • Are prepared for college, career, and civic life in the 21st century
  • Exhibit the capacities of literate individual

Professional Learning for Districts and Schools

Topics:

​We partner with you to design customized professional learning experiences for the entire district or school to build the capacity of teachers and leaders so that every student has equitable access to high quality literacy instruction.  Sessions can be organized by school, grade span or content area.  Areas of study may include: lesson design and responsive use of instructional materials, the foundations of early literacy, and formative practice - supporting and responding and responding to student literacy behaviors.


Technical Support for Districts, Leaders and Leadership Teams

We provide guidance and technical assistance for the development of systemic district and school-wide plans for professional learning and literacy development. Topics of interest may include: creating a coherent instructional plan with curriculum mapping, materials selection process, determining an instructional focus to improve literacy for all students, and matching professional learning structures to intended outcomes.


Literacy Coaching Support

(Teacher) Topics:

​For Teacher Teams: The changes that teachers need to make to their instructional practice are highly individualized. SDCOE’s literacy coaching support addresses teacher’s unique needs.  We work with district and school teams in the development of a shared professional learning goal, and build teacher capacity to plan and reflect upon lessons that emphasize understanding.  Our goal is to support students as thinkers and learners.

(TOSAS and Coaches) Topics:

  • Developing expert noticing of literacy behavior
  • Analyzing lesson
  • Providing instructional coaching and support

For TOSAS and Coaches: Our team also works directly with lead teachers and coaches to deepen their expertise of literacy in areas such as developing expert noticing of literacy behaviors and analyzing lessons to determine the next high-leverage aspect of instructional support. We build leadership skills in clarifying one’s role, coaching and facilitating teams towards a common goal.
