Science Professional Development is designed to help leaders and teachers prepare for and implement the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards through three phases of learning: awareness, transition, and implementation.
Elementary Science Academy
Effective implementation of The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) has the abiity to transform
teaching and learning in the classroom.
Elementary teachers will
ultimately be tasked with implementing these two sets of standards in
tandem with one another. They cannot do this without intensive
professional development support and integrated instruction materials.
The depth of knowledge and pedagogical skill required to implement the
NGSS and CCSS cannot happen in a quick two-hour workshop or one-day
professional development. It requires an in depth, immersive and
supportive environment to learn, develop, and plan for success. The
Elementary Science Academy is the solution to this need.
Elementary Science Academy is an intensive professional learning
experience consisting of a four-day summer institute and five follow-up
days. In between the academy days, teachers will be asked to implement
curriculum modules and teaching strategies, reflect on their practice,
and present samples of student work to grade level colleagues in a
professional learning community structure.
Goals of Elementary Science Academy
Register online for Session 1: June 9 - 12, 2014
- Build grade level content understanding in life, physical, and earth/space sciences.
- Develop skills in the pedagogy required to teach science with the NGSS/CCSS.
- Establish a routine of writing in science writing in science using science notebooks as a thinking tool for students.
- Provide teachers with NGSS/CCSS aligned science modules that will be taught in the classroom.
- Reflect on evidence of student learning through the implementation of NGSS/CCSS aligned science modules.
- Develop teach ability to plan science lessons that integrate science content and literacy.
- Build district science leadership by developing grade level teacher leaders.

Science Leadership and Professional Development Networks
The Science Leadership and Professional Development Networks are designed to bring leaders of science reform and professional development together with the goal of collaboratively preparing all teachers to implement the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards and transforming science education in San Diego County. District and site administrators, teacher leaders, and community science leaders are invited to participate in one of the networks.
NGSS Grade Level Academies (Middle School and High School)
Three-day grade-level academies provide secondary teachers with an opportunity to come together and look in depth at the conceptual shifts and three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as their connection to the Common Core State Standards. Teachers adapt lessons and instructional units to align to the NGSS and CCSS. The third day of the academy provides teachers an opportunity to look at student work and reflect/revise the unit or lessons they have adapted. Click the dates for registration information.
Implementing the Common Core through Science Notebooks (Elementary)
Teachers wanting to bring the Common Core alive through science will want to have their students use science notebooks. This professional-development experience will help elementary teachers understand the rationale and importance of the science notebook, learn how to implement them in their classroom, and develop student thinking through writing. Teachers will be able to make connections between writing in science and the Common Core State Standards and set the stage for helping students improve understanding through high-quality writing in science. A follow up third day allows teachers to evaluate student thinking in a notebook and to revise their implementation plan through collaboration with peers. Next Generation Science Standards Study Groups
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) have been released, leaving
many leaders and teachers asking questions about what they are, the
timeline for implementation, what will change for science, and what they
can do now to begin using the new standards. One-day study groups are
being organized for k-12 teachers, leaders, administrators, and
curriculum specialists to increase awareness of the new science
standards. Information included in the study group includes a historical
perspective of the NGSS, the conceptual shifts for science, the three
dimensions and architecture of the standards, and the connection between
NGSS and the Common Core State Standards.
