The State Seal of Biliteracy (SSB), per Assembly Bill 815 (Brownley, Chapter 618, Statutes of 2011), became effective January 1, 2012.  For more information, see the California Department of Education’s Seal of Biliteracy page.  

The purposes of a California State Seal of Biliteracy are:

  1. To encourage pupils to develop biliteracy skills
  2. To provide employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills
  3. To revitalize and promote world language instruction in public schools
  4. To encourage the development of dual language immersion programs and world, native, and heritage language programs in kindergarten and grades 1 to 12, and students' rich and diverse language assets

Districts who have board-adopted a Seal of Biliteracy policy  are honored at the annual Biliteracy Symposium. Past districts who have been recognized for their adoption and/or Pathway awards are as follows:

Sweetwater Union High School District – 2009
Borrego Springs Unified School District – 2010
San Diego Unified School District – 2011
San Ysidro School District – 2011
Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District – 2011
Escondido Union High School District – 2012
Lakeside Union School District – 2012
Lemon Grove School Disctrict – 2011
Grossmont Union High School District – 2012
