 Bob Watkins Re-elected as President of San Diego County Board of Education

​Alpine resident Bob Watkins was re-elected as President of the San Diego County Board of Education Wednesday at the board’s first meeting of 2008.

Watkins, the president and chairman of RJ Watkins Co., an international management consulting firm, said, “I am flattered that my colleagues think I’m worthy to represent them and the County Board of Education. The County Office of Education is doing a miraculous job, but there will always be work to do to see that all students get the best education possible.”

Moments after Watkins’ election as Board President, Sharon Jones of La Mesa was elected Vice President of the board.

The County Board of Education sets policy for the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE). The staff of the County Office of Education, headed by County Superintendent of Schools Randy Ward, provides a wide range of services for the 42 school districts in the county. The County Board of Education hired Ward in June, 2006.

Among the more critical functions of the SDCOE staff are:

  • Business services, which help school districts maintain solvent and process payroll checks for more than 40,000 local public school employees;
  • Curriculum and instruction services, which help schools and districts meet increasingly rigorous and scrutinized state academic standards;
  • Human resources. All San Diego County teaching credentials are certified by SDCOE HR staff;
  • Administration and operation of the Juvenile Court and Community Schools, alternative schools for students who, for many reasons, can not attend traditional public schools.
  • Administration of Joint Powers Authorities which provide school districts with greatly reduced prices for legal services and employee medical benefits, saving taxpayers millions of dollars annually.
