Olympian High Wins 28th Annual San Diego County Academic Decathlon

Olympian High School in the Sweetwater Union High School District is the 2010 San Diego County Academic Decathlon Champion, crowned February 17 at the 28th annual Decathlon awards banquet at the University of San Diego.

Defeating reigning Decathlon champion Hilltop High, also of the Sweetwater Union High School District, Olympian High dominated this year’s competition, winning nine of the 10 Decathlon events. It was the first year Olympian competed in the Decathlon. The school opened in 2007.
More than 140 students from 16 local high schools took part in the February 6 competition, which was conducted at Olympian High School in Chula Vista. This year’s topic, the French Revolution, challenged students on the history of the event, but that didn’t stop Olympian High from sweeping the competition with first place honors.

“Three years ago I stood in this same place and I said it would be my last time,” said Ken Boulton, Olympian High Decathlon Coach and former Southwest High Coach. “When I came to a recent competition a year ago my competitive juices started to flow again. I work with the best of the best. To win this County award is very special to me.” Boulton is the most successful coach in local Decathlon history, as he led Southwest High to five consecutive wins.
“It’s so exciting to see all of our hard work pay off,” said David Pullido, Olympian High Senior and first place winner of the Speech competition. “I enjoyed the Speech portion of the competition the most because that is where I could be the most creative."

For the first time in the competition’s history, with the help of business and community leaders, SDCOE honored students and their coaches with an awards banquet and ceremony- befitting their academic successes and dedication. The awards ceremony was made possible due to the generous contributions of the following sponsors: Mission Federal Credit Union, Allied Waste Services, Bridgepoint Education, Coca Cola Bottling Co. of Southern CA, Cox Communications, Ecology Auto Parts, Otay Land Company, South Bay Expressway, Computers 2 San Diego Kids, and Corky McMillin Companies.

The entire top ten was:

1. Olympian High, Sweetwater Union High District
2. Hilltop High, Sweetwater Union High District
3. Southwest High, Sweetwater UHSD
4. San Ysidro High, Sweetwater UHSD
5. Academy of Our Lady of Peace, parochial
6. Bonita Vista High, Sweetwater UHSD
7. Fallbrook High, Fallbrook Union HSD
8. Sweetwater High, Sweetwater UHSD
9. Mar Vista High, Sweetwater UHSD
10. Montgomery High, Sweetwater UHSD

Another first for the evening’s awards banquet went to the nine students who earned 3rd, 2nd, and overall highest cumulative scores in each of the Decathlon’s three academic divisions - Varsity, Scholastic and Honors. Each student received a certificate from Computers 2 San Diego Kids for a laptop or desktop computer of their choice. Computers 2 San Diego Kids provides San Diego families with repaired computers with fully installed software from San Diego businesses.

County Superintendent Randy Ward, Jerry R. Rindone, South County’s representative on the County Board of Education, John Witt, San Diego City´s representative on the County Board of Education, and Mark Anderson, North Inland representative of the County Board of Education, attended the USD awards program and commended all the participating students, teachers and parents.

Olympian High will now represent San Diego County in the California Academic Decathlon Championship, to be held March 13-16, 2009 in Sacramento. The national competition is April 21-24, 2010 in Omaha, Nebraska.
