U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan this week recognized
Poway Unified School District’s Del Sur Elementary as a National Blue Ribbon
Nationwide, 337 schools are being recognized as 2014
National Blue Ribbon Schools based on their overall academic excellence or
their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. These
included 24 in California. Del Sur is the only one in San Diego County.
“These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American
education—that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish
when schools provide safe, creative, and challenging learning environments,”
Secretary Duncan said. “National Blue Ribbon Schools are models of consistent
excellence and a resource for other schools and districts. We celebrate them
for their tireless effort and boundless creativity in reaching and teaching
The federal Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and
private schools from elementary through high school where students either
achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in
closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students,
educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools
where students master challenging content.
Del Sur received recognition as an Exemplary Achievement Gap
Closing School, which means it’s among their state's highest performing schools
in closing achievement gaps between its subgroups and all students over the
past five years.
The school was nominates by Sate Superintendent of Public Instruction
“I commend these amazing schools and their commitment to
providing the kind of learning environment in which teachers can excel and
students can achieve,” Torlakson said about the 24 in California. “They have
brought out the very best in their students and themselves.”
Del Sur Principal Doug Johnson and his team of staff,
students and families celebrated the announcement this afternoon during a
surprise assembly. The school features an innovative, relationship-based
