Revamped iVIE Awards Coming This Month

With more than 400 entries from all over the county, this year's Innovative Video in Education Awards are shaping up to be the most exciting yet.

The film festival and awards show - also known as iVIE - is organized by the San Diego County Office of Education. It will be held April 25 at the UltraStar Cinemas Mission Valley at Hazard Center.

The festival will be hosted by six local students. It will be divided into three shows based on grade level, and all students will have a chance to walk the red carpet and be interviewed before each show. Inside there will be interactive exhibits and a selfie camera for students to post pictures.

This year's iVIE competition is presented by the San Diego County Credit Union and will feature new categories and a judging rubric that aligns more closely with learning objectives and the new state standards.

More than half of this year's entries were from schools who hadn't participated in the past. Videos were submitted from 24 different school districts, charter schools, and private schools.

"We have so many high-quality, standards-based student films that it was difficult for the judges to pick the finalists," said Leigh Murrell, who is organizing the event. "The judges were impressed with the students' work, research, and learning."

The first show on April 25 will include videos from elementary schools. The next for middle school students as well as those categories that included grades 3 through 8. The final show will be for high school students.

There will be a Grand Recognition Award given out at the end of each show.

"It will be an exciting day," Murrell said. "We hope you will join us for part or all of it."

The iVIE program is a powerful way for teachers to incorporate standards-based hands-on experiences into their lessons. The competition provides a chance for students to take ownership of their learning in a collaborative and rigorous environment.

The competition has drawn thousands of participating students from throughout the county over the last 14 years.
