San Diego County to Celebrate “A Salute to Teachers”

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and partners are gearing up to celebrate teachers from across the region for their commitment to education and children at the 26th annual “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers.”

The Academy Awards-style event is a live, televised show at the historic Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego. This year's show is set for 8 p.m. Sept. 10.

“Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” recognizes the county’s 26,000 public school teachers and features notable emcees and presenters, musical and dance performances, and the announcement of the five 2016-17 San Diego County Teachers of the Year. Those five, who are selected from among 43 district teachers of the year, will go on to represent the region at the California Teacher of the Year program later this year.

Tickets are on sale now for “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers,” with title sponsor San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU). Tickets are $15.50, or $14.10 for groups of 10 or more and those who mention title sponsor SDCCU. Fees may apply. Tickets can be purchased online, by calling the Balboa Theatre box office at 570-1100 (all San Diego area codes), or at the Ticketing Service Advance Sales windows at 1100 Third Ave., at B Street and Civic Center Plaza, in downtown San Diego. The Balboa Theatre ticket windows are open on performance days. For more information about the show and to see a list of nominees, visit SDCOE's Teacher of the Year page.

The 43 nominees for Teacher of the Year were selected by their respective school districts, including one from SDCOE. Of those, five will be named County Teacher of the Year. The top five teachers are selected based on student achievement, professional development and community involvement, teaching philosophy and personal style, knowledge of educational issues and trends, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability, and their ability to serve as ambassadors of education.

The live, gala event is sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union and produced by Cox Communications in cooperation with the SDCOE. The show also will air live on Channel 4 San Diego. “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” has received national recognition, and has earned numerous awards, including more than 20 Emmy Awards, and, most recently, two Beacon Awards for Channel 4 San Diego for excellence in programming.

Additional show sponsors include Nothing Bundt Cakes, The Super Dentists, Procopio, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Entravision, iHeartMedia Inc., and KUSI.
