Enjoy a memorable evening of music and theater as the San Diego State University Performing Arts Troupe presents “The Ragman” on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. This program is part of the Free Family Arts and Literacy Connection series held in the Rolando Room at The Salvation Army Kroc Center located at 6605 University Avenue.
This family-friendly evening takes the audience on a journey of empathy, humanity and caring for each other. Using the children’s book by Lauren Miles called “The Rag Coat” as inspiration, the story focuses on a symbolic everyman who needs a helping hand.
The audience is asked to bring donations to The Salvation Army’s Socks and Sandwiches program such as baggies, lunch bags, snacks, cases of water, clean socks, tarps, tents, gently used clothing and blankets. Donations will be collected and given out to families in need.
The San Diego State University Performing Arts Troupe is a unique community education outreach program that consists of undergraduate music education majors, music credential students and current music teachers who combine their various musical talents to create and perform original productions for children and families.
Artistic Director Jerry Hager, a theater mime artist since 1980 and former instructor at Grossmont College, leads the troupe. Hager is a master teaching artist in theater with Arts for Learning San Diego. The Project Director is Dr. Nan McDonald, coordinator of Music Education at San Diego State University.
The Free Family Arts and Literacy Connection series is co-sponsored by The Salvation Army Kroc Center and Arts for Learning San Diego. All Family Arts and Literacy Connection programs are free to the public. The series engages families in both live performance and hands-on workshops. Families receive a free book tied to the theme of the evening’s program to encourage at-home reading.
In addition, each family takes home a free book that connects to the theme of the evening. Upcoming Free Family Arts and Literacy dates include Feb. 22, April 26, and May 24.
