Dr. Paul Gothold, San Diego County
Superintendent of Schools, released the following statement today after Gov.
Jerry Brown unveiled his proposed 2018-19 state budget:
Fully funding the Local Control Funding Formula is a good first step
toward restoring schools back to the level of funding we received in
2007-08, and I applaud Gov. Brown for adding resources to the K-12 education
system. Investing in schools is investing in the future of our great
state and the nation, which is why it is disappointing that even with this
additional funding, California ranks at or near the bottom nationally
in nearly every measure of school funding and staffing. We must tackle the issue
of funding adequacy; the current level of funding necessary for schools is not
sufficient to prepare our diverse students for success in an environment where
industry and jobs are rapidly changing. It’s my hope that this May, Gov.
Brown and the Legislature will take any newfound revenues from a growing economy and
build toward adequate funding that puts California on par with our counterparts
across the country and globally.
