Point Loma High School Wins National Comedy Theatre High School League Annual Improv Comedy Tournament

Point Loma improve team holding up their award for winning the 2013 tournamentPoint Loma High School took top honors in National Comedy Theatre’s High School League improv comedy tournament May 4 and 5, 2013. The team from PLHS won the competition for the third year in a row and will perform against NCT’s main stage cast on Friday, May 10 at the 9:45 p.m. performance.

“This performance illustrated the hard work that the students and coaches have put into this league and I’m so proud of every school that participated,” says Gary Kramer, founder and artistic director, National Comedy Theatre. “The competition between Point Loma High School’s team and NCT’s main stage cast this Friday should be exciting – I don’t think the main stage players realize what they’re up against.”

High schools involved in the 2013 NCT High School League included:

  • Bishops High School
  • Coronado High School
  • Francis Parker
  • La Jolla High School
  • Monarch School
  • Mt. Carmel High School
  • Otay Ranch High School
  • Pacific Ridge High School
  • Pt. Loma High School
  • San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts
  • St. Augustine High School

This year’s coach for the PLHS team was Casey Gardner, a Point Loma High School alumnus. Gardner has been with National Comedy Theatre since 2005. Initially working as a "Mr. Voice" and house staff, he later became a member of the National Comedy Theatre´s main stage cast in 2007. Since then he has been heavily involved with the theatre, performing and teaching all levels of NCT workshops.

"It’s great to see the students get so excited for this competition," said Gardner. "Without realizing it, they’re actually learning skills that are going to help them with school, social interaction, and even their career later in life."

As a reward for winning the High School League competition, the Point Loma High School team will compete against the National Comedy Theatre’s main stage cast on Friday, May 10 at 9:45 p.m. For more information, contact the NCT Box Office at 619-295-4999. Tickets are available online or at the door for just $15 per person. National Comedy Theatre is located at 3717 India Street in the Mission Hills neighborhood of San Diego. Valet parking available for just $7.

National Comedy Theatre is also gearing up for its annual Summer Comedy Camp, where students have the opportunity to explore the worlds of improv and sketch writing. Much like NCT´s professional team, students ages 12 to 17 will quickly form an ensemble of performers, working together to develop their skills and, ultimately, build a quality performance that friends and family will be invited to attend at our theatre in San Diego.
