San Diego County Credit Union will sponsor The Ben Vereen Awards for 2016 – the third straight year that the financial institution has supported this theater arts competition for high school students.
"SDCCU is proud to support our community and once again sponsor The Ben Vereen Awards, which highlights talented youths here in San Diego," SDCCU President and CEO Teresa Halleck said. "We are honored to provide every student, with or without a formal theater department at their school, the opportunity to participate in this exciting competition."
The awards program includes a Wellness Through the Arts Essay Contest, which is open to currently enrolled San Diego County high school students, in grades 9 through 12, and high school drama departments. The contest theme is "My Best Day," and participants are invited to submit a written or video essay telling their story of how the arts has helped them overcome a personal problem, such as bullying, diabetes, low self-esteem, or obesity.
The Wellness Through the Arts essay entry deadline is 11:59 p.m. Feb. 29. The top five individual entries will win $500; the top theater department entry – a collaborative video – will win $1,000. For rules and further submission information, go to benvereenawards.com.
The Ben Vereen Awards, held in collaboration with Broadway/San Diego, is a two-part competition for high school students who take on leading roles in their school's musical theater productions. Two winners – a female champion and a male champion – are selected from a field of 20 finalists at the awards event May 29 at the Balboa Theatre, and go on to compete at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York City.
