It's back-to-school time, which also means Prudential's search to find America's top youth volunteers begins. Now in its 19th year, the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is accepting applications for students in grades 5 through 12 for the 2014 awards program.
Young volunteers can apply online at http://spirit.prudential.com or at www.nassp.org/spirit. Applications must be completed by November 5, 2013, and then submitted to a middle or high school principal, Girl Scout council, county 4-H agent, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or HandsOn Network affiliate. Paper versions of the application form are available by calling 877-525-8491 toll-free.
After-school programs and local organizations will select local honorees in November, and the top two in each state will be awarded $1,000, a silver medallion and a trip to Washington, D.C., next May for the national recognition events. There, 10 will be named America's top youth volunteers, winning additional $5,000 awards, gold medallions and crystal trophies, plus $5,000 grants from The Prudential Foundation for the nonprofit organizations of their choice.
The Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by Prudential in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, has honored more than 100,000 students at the local, state and national levels.
The awards represent the United States’ largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer service. The Spirit of Community Awards program is also conducted in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Ireland, India and China.
