Inquisitive students, faculty and staff filled the Chula Vista Middle School library to get a first glance at longtime Channel 4 reporter Jane Mitchell’s inspirational book, “One on One – My Journey with Hall of Famers, Fan Favorites and Rising Stars.” The Sweetwater Union High School District is the first in the county to participate in the “Book Buddy” event and receive the books. Mitchell and Eastlake High alumni and former Padre, Edgar Gonzalez addressed the group during a presentation and book signing.

“I am here today because I believe in giving back and motivating young people to set goals and pursue their dreams,” said Mitchell. “Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to interview many star athletes who once sat in the seats you are sitting in today. I want to encourage you all that sky’s the limit.”

For 15-years, Mitchell explored the lives of professional athletes and rising sports stars on the television program “One on One with Jane Mitchell.” After countless interviews, including Sweetwater Alums, Adrian and Edgar Gonzalez, Mitchell developed a need to tell not only the stories of the athletes, but hers of becoming a journalist and the risks and joys of the enviable job of covering athletes.

“Donating my time by sharing my life experiences as a professional athlete is why I am here today,” said Gonzalez. “There’s so much more to going pro then what meets the eye. It’s about hard work, commitment and keeping a focused perspective on your goals.”

With continuing sponsorship support, the goal is to donate books to 200 schools (3 per school) throughout all of San Diego County.
