Comments: Applicants must be a high school senior who will enroll in either a two- or four- year college. Criteria includes overcoming personal obstacles and troubles in life associated with drugs or alcohol. Students must display academic achievement and demonstrate a strong commitment to setting and reaching life goals. Submissions must also include a letter of recommendation from a coach, teacher, counselor or principal attesting to why the nominee’s behavior, attitude, desire and character warrant this scholarship.

Comments:In 1999, Cox Communications established a fund at The San Diego Foundation to provide scholarships to graduating high school seniors in their educational endeavors. These scholarships are specific to San Diego County residents who live in a Cox service area and will attend a higher educational institution in California. Recipients will be chosen based on their commitment to scholastic achievement and community involvement while demonstrating the ability to overcome life’s challenges. Mensa Foundation Scholarships

Amount: Various scholarships will be awarded at the local, regional and national level in amounts ranging from $300 to $2000. San Diego Mensa awards from one to three $1000 scholarships annually.
Comments: Eligibility Requirements -The applicant must currently be a resident of a participating American Mensa Local Group Area (San Diego County residents may apply); the applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning during the academic year following the application date; and the applicant must submit an essay of 550 words or less explaining his/her career, academic and/or vocational goals. Application Process - Applications are available from Sept 15 to Jan 15 each year. Applicants should visit the website to obtain information on the various scholarships and download the application form. The form must be postmarked no later than January 15th and mailed to the address listed on the application.

The Padres Scholars program awards college scholarships to 30 academically talented, financially disadvantaged public middle school students in San Diego County each year. Since 1998, Qualcomm, Inc. funds five of these scholarships.
Each Padres Scholars scholarship is $5,000 (plus accrued interest), payable upon matriculation into a four-year college. The scholarship will be used for tuition and books.

Applicant must enroll in a degree program that leads to a K-12 teaching career and must commit to teaching in San Diego Unified School District a minimum of three years after completing a credential program. Applicant must have demonstrated financial need. The scholarship is renewable up to four years providing the applicant meets the required academic standing and approved course of study. Spence Reese Scholarship by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego County

Amount: Each year, four-year $16,000 scholarships are awarded to four (4) young men who aspire towards careers in Political Science, Medicine, Law and Engineering. One scholarship is awarded each year in each category.
Comments: The prestigious Spence Reese Scholarships were endowed by Spence’s wife Jeanne in the 1960s and are restricted by the Trust to be awarded annually to four (4) male students who are in their senior year in high school. Past award winners are bright and articulate young men with top grades and test scores who need the outside financial support to make possible their college dreams. Administered by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego County.
Deadline: Applications must be received no later than April 1st each year.
Criteria: Applicants are judged on: academic standing; academic ability; financial ability; potential for good citizenship; and are selected based on guidelines established by the Spence Reese Trust.
