The San Diego County Office of Education offers free instructional programs that are sponsored by either the City of San Diego Environmental Services Department, the Port of San Diego or the County of San Diego.
All programs align with the California State Science Standards.
Recycling Programs—City of San Diego
Forty half-day EnviroSchool programs will be
presented for students in grades 4 through 6. These programs will give students an overview
of environmental issues in San Diego and beyond. Each program will
include an introduction featuring the San Diego Zoo's own Dr.
Zoolittle. At three hands-on rotating stations of the Splash Science
Mobile Lab, students will learn about watershed issues and become
scientists to solve a water quality mystery. At Green Machine, students learn where their food comes from and the importance of a
healthy environment to good nutrition. The "Eco-Teacher," who will
give students an in-depth look at the three R's--reduce, reuse and recycle. Each EnviroSchool program will serve up to three classes and
will be held at your school. This program is free to schools within San Diego City
Up to fifteen EnviroTours are
available to junior high and middle school students and up to five
EnviroTours are available to high school students. A bus will pick
students up at school for an approximately three and a half hour field
trip to the Miramar Landfill, Miramar Greenery and Nursery, Hazmat
Center, Allan Co. Buy Back Center and Recycling Processing Facility.
EnviroTour program will give students an overview of what happens to
items that are recycled and what facilities are doing in the City of San
Diego to reduce waste in our landfills. This program is free to schools
within San Diego City limits.
Elementary schools who are not eligible for an Enviroschool can contact SDCOE about the possibility of an assembly. The assembly will address the subjects of waste reduction, recycling, composting, litter issues and other waste management and environmental subjects.

Integrated Pest Management - Port of San Diego
The Port of San Diego's Environmental Services Department has sponsored the San Diego County Office of Education's "Green Machine" traveling outreach van to visit elementary schools within the Chollas Creek watershed area. This interactive agricultural program teaches students about soil, the water cycle and environmentally friendly pest control.
The Green Machine curriculum is aligned with the California State Science Content Standards for grades K-4. The group size for the program is one class, and each visit to your school by the Green Machine will consist of four one-hour programs.
This free program is limited to schools within the Chollas Creek watershed area.
County of San Diego Watershed
The County of San Diego Environmental Services provides a limited number of free Green Machine or Splash Lab programs to elementary schools within the unincorporated areas of San Diego County.
