What is it Friday CAFE? Family engagement professionals often work in isolation. Friday CAFÉ is a morning discussion and networking series built to help those in the field connect. We gather in interesting locations across the County (museums, cultural centers, etc), and we invite inspiring speakers to give a TED-like 20-minute talk. Presentations are followed by ample opportunity for group discussion and networking. Coffee and refreshments are always served.
The discussions are meant to challenge our collective thinking on family and community engagement in schools. Last year, our topics included "trust in schools," "working in isolation on family engagement," and "the strength of immigration." This year, we'll have sessions on bilingual education, parent leadership, restorative practices, and more.
School and district staff that work with families, community-based organizations, parent leaders, etc. Friday CAFE is for anyone at the intersection of families and learning. If someone is working on family engagement on a regular basis, it is likely that they operate in isolation, and there is no professional organization that facilitates peer-to-peer learning. We aim to change that.
Friday Cafes are offered 5-6 times during the school year in different sections of the county.
