San Diego County Teachers of the Year 2019 Application Workshop

Nicole Shina will assist candidates in completing the application and discuss other Teacher of the Year activities. The workshop will also be available via videoconference at our North County Regional Education Center in San Marcos. Attendance is strongly encouraged. If you are unable to attend please send a representative (someone from your district who will help you complete the application). RSVP to Nicole Shina​ by March 30.​

Application deadline for San Diego County Teachers of the Year

The application forms and instructions are available on the California Department of Education California Teachers of the Year website​.

Submit three completed applications (one original single-sided and two double-sided copies) in person or via mail to:​

County Teachers of the Year Interviews 

County Teachers of the Year applicants who meet the CDE's eligibility requirements and the application technical requirements will be photographed and interviewed​ on one of these dates at the San Diego County Office of Education, room 301, between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Teachers must contact Nicole Shina​ at 858-292-3850 to schedule their appointment. Please allow one hour for the interview.

17th Annual Padres Teacher Appreciation Night—Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals,  7:10 p.m.

All District Teachers of the Year will be recognized on the field before the game. You will receive two complimentary tickets. Discounted tickets available for family and friends. See the event flier for pricing and purchase information.

In-Class Photo Session for "A Salute to Teachers"

A professional photographer from Cox Communications will visit your classroom to take photos of you and your students. These photos will be incorporated into the show. The approximately 45-minute photo session takes place during class time and can be scheduled ahead of time at a convenient day and time. You will receive an email with a form to fill out and indicate three preferred dates and time slots. Additional details will be provided once your session has been scheduled. 

May 29 to June 6  

Videotaped Interview for "A Salute to Teachers" 

You, one adult (colleague or principal), and one student (former or current) will be scheduled to go to the Cox studios in Kearny Mesa for a videotaped interview with Carla Hockley, producer of Salute to Teachers. Please select people who will be comfortable in front of the camera. You will also be photographed. The picture is a head shot and will be used for publicity purposes.​​ You will receive an email with a form to sign up to reserve a session. Additional details will be provided once your session has been scheduled.

          Cox Communications VIP Reception

You and one guest are invited to a pre-show VIP Reception. The reception includes a red carpet walk. Please be prepared to talk to reporters on camera and have your photo taken.

          Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers 

"Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers," a televised event at the Balboa Theatre, and announcement of the five 2019 San Diego County Teachers of the Year. Doors open an hour before the show, and District Teachers of the Year must be in their seats 30 minutes before the show. 

2019 California Teachers of the Year Timeline (for the five 2019 County Teachers of the Year) 


County Offices of Education are contacted to arrange site visits for selected applications. Site visits are conducted by a team of teacher-observers. Selected applicants are interviewed by a state selection committee that includes the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or his designee. 


The State Superintendent makes the final selection and personally notifies the California Teachers of the Year. The California Department of Education​ publicly announces the winner.
