JCCS Students Learn About Voter Registration
Representatives from Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber’s office visited four Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS) to talk about the importance of voter registration during National High School Voter Education Week.
Jannell Jackson and Denise Green visited the Youth Transition Campus, 37ECB, Lindsay Community School, and Monarch Community School to encourage students 18 and older to register to vote and those who are 16 and 17 to pre-register.
The representatives shared information about the importance of voting and how to register to vote in California. They shared statistics highlighting that individuals ages 18-25 have the lowest voter registration and turnout among all age groups in the state. The team also shared how students can participate in student mock elections and how to work at polling locations.
Marianna, a student at Lindsay Community School, was excited to learn about being able to pre-register to vote at 16, which she plans to do.
“Voting means a lot to me,” she said. “It wasn’t too long ago that Latinx or women weren’t able to vote so it’s amazing to see our people up there ready to a make a change in the world.”
Students at Lindsay are creating a guide with endorsements for president and local issues that impact them.
Esther, a teacher at Lindsay who is helping students create the guide, said she is teaching students about the political parties, discussing general political issues and environmental issues, and presenting all sides of the issues so students can identity their preferences. The guide should be finalized next month.
