Board Resolution Recognizes March 31, 2024 as César Chávez Day
The San Diego County Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution recognizing March 31, 2024 as César Chávez Day. Resolution No. 2024-06 reads:
WHEREAS César Chávez was a visionary leader who led the first successful farmworkers union in American history, and whose organization, United Farm Workers, fought for dignity, respect, humane living conditions, fair wages, and other rights and protections for farmworkers; and
WHEREAS through his commitment to nonviolence, the influence of César Chávez extended far beyond agriculture and inspired individuals working to better human rights, empower workers, and advance the American Dream, which includes all people of the United States; and
WHEREAS he was also a great humanitarian who influenced and inspired millions of Americans from all walks of life to seek social justice and civil rights for the poor and disenfranchised; and
WHEREAS César Chávez said, “Real education should consist of drawing the goodness and the best out of our own students. What better book can there be than the book of humanity;” and
WHEREAS on March 31 we celebrate the birthday of César Chávez and honor his contributions to workers’ rights and social justice, as well as his selfless service to others; and
WHEREAS in 1994, Chávez was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, and in 2014, President Obama declared March 31 César Chávez Day; and
WHEREAS the San Diego County Office of Education recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of César Chávez to ensure equality, justice, and dignity for all people of the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the San Diego County Board of Education, in honor of the life and legacy of César Chávez, does hereby recognize March 31, 2024, as César Chávez Day.
