Board Resolution Proclaims March 2026 as Women's History Month

Board Resolution Proclaims March 2026 as Women's History Month

San Diego County Board of Education proclaims March 2026 as Women's History Month. Resolution No. 2026-09 reads:

WHEREAS Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s valuable contributions to history, culture, and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987; and

WHEREAS the 2026 theme for Women’s History Month is, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” recognizing the leadership of women – particularly those from communities that have been historically marginalized – in advancing environmental, social, and economic sustainability; and

WHEREAS women in the United States have played and continue to play critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the nation by constituting a significant portion of the labor force working inside and outside of the home and providing the majority of the volunteer labor force; and

WHEREAS women were instrumental in establishing early charitable, philanthropic, and cultural institutions in our nation; often doing so despite legal, economic, and social barriers that limited their access to resources and decision‑making power; and

WHEREAS women of every race, class, and ethnic background served as early leaders in the forefront of every major progressive social change movement, including abolition, emancipation, labor rights, civil rights, disability rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, environmental justice, and peace; and

WHEREAS women have served our country courageously in the military and continue to serve in roles that challenge longstanding and expand pathways for future generations; and

WHEREAS women have been leaders, not only to secure their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also to advance equity and justice for all communities, often carrying the dual role of advocating for change and confronting systemic inequities; and

WHEREAS despite these contributions, the experiences and leadership of women, especially women who have been historically marginalized, have been consistently underrepresented, overlooked, and undervalued in literature, curriculum, and the broader teaching and study of American history.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the San Diego County Board of Education does hereby proclaim March 2026 as Women’s History Month and commit to uplifting inclusive narratives, expanding equitable learning opportunities, and ensuring that the diverse histories and contributions of all women are recognized, taught, and celebrated in our schools and communities.
