Canyon Crest Goes Back-to-Back, Wins 2026 Academic League Championship

Canyon Crest Goes Back-to-Back, Wins 2026 Academic League Championship
Members of Canyon Crest Academy Academic League team

Canyon Crest Academy repeated as Academic League champions after besting Point Loma in the final, 850 – 310.

Both teams exchanged leads in the early going, and the score was level at 245 at the halfway mark. After the interval, there was no slowing down Canyon Crest as they cruised to victory. This marks Canyon Crest’s second consecutive championship as they also won in 2025.

Academic League is a lightning-fast, team game similar to Jeopardy. High shools that participate in the Academic League put together teams that compete in four regional leagues across the county. Once league winners are selected, the champs of each league face off until the San Diego County Academic League champion team emerges.

SDCOE has supported the event for more than four decades to create opportunities for students to highlight their knowledge, celebrate academic success, and compete for their schools.

For the third straight year, a local high school student served as emcee, and was joined for the first time by a sideline reporter. Student hosts Uma and Kaylynne both said they were excited about the opportunity to participate and gain valuable on-camera experience.

The format features questions from moderator Mark Heinze, which cover a wide variety of topics and subjects including science, literature, history, math, and music. Five students play on each team at a time, with substitutions allowed during timeouts, buzzing in to answer questions. Many questions are toss-ups, where the first team to ring in and correctly answer earns points; if the team answers correctly, they receive a bonus question worth more points. Points are deducted for incorrect answers to toss-up questions, and the other team then has three seconds to answer the question correctly.

If you missed the action, or just want to relive the excitement, you can check out the livestreams of both semifinals and the championship.
