County Superintendent Statement on Federal Funding Freeze

San Diego County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gloria E. Ciriza released the following statement regarding the federal funding freeze of educational grant dollars. 

The Trump administration has illegally frozen more than $50 million in funding San Diego County schools expected to receive for the 2025-26 school fiscal year, which began July 1.

That funding pays for before- and after-school programs; student support and academic enrichment; language instruction for students who are learning English; professional development for our educators; and services for students whose families migrate across our state to work in agriculture fields.

It’s shocking and frustrating to see this level of indifference to programs that have decades-long track records of helping young people find support, belonging, and success.

Public school budgets rely on a stable and predictable flow of funding from a combination of local, state, and federal sources. This unprecedented funding freeze will have a devastating impact on San Diego County families and some of our most vulnerable students. 

On behalf of our nearly 500,000 public school students and families, I call on the Trump administration to release these illegally impounded funds and let educators do our job of ensuring the next generation of children have what they need to thrive.
