Dr. Francisco Escobedo to be Honored at Leadership in Biliteracy Symposium
In recognition of his work championing dual language programs and celebrating the strengths of multilingual students, former Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) Superintendent Dr. Francisco Escobedo will receive the Bea Gonzales Leadership in Biliteracy Award from the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE).
This esteemed award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the education of students who are multilingual learners or English learners in our region. Historically, these leaders have inspired and advocated for equity-centered learning environments that celebrate the full diversity of our students.
Dr. Escobedo has been a steadfast advocate for biliteracy in San Diego County for decades. During his 12 years as superintendent of CVESD, he championed dual language programs, leaving a lasting legacy where over half of the schools in the district are designated as dual language schools.
In his previous role leading the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST), Dr. Escobedo and his team showcased exemplary schools that support high percentages of students who are multilingual learners or English learners. Additionally, as a member of the State Board of Education, he meets quarterly with regional English learner specialists to remain engaged with the latest developments affecting students in California. His commitment to biliteracy extends to all levels of education.
Dr. Escobedo's remarkable contributions will be celebrated at the SDCOE 24th annual Leadership in Biliteracy Symposium, an annual event that recognizes the people in our schools, districts, and communities who go above and beyond to ensure our multilingual and bilingual students have what they need to succeed.
The symposium will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. May 1 at the La Jolla Marriott. Registration is now open to attend the event.
