Greenfield Middle School and Principal Jacob Launder Recognized for Counseling Efforts
Greenfield Middle School, in the Cajon Valley Union School District, has been awarded the 2025 Exemplar Counseling Program of the Year by the California Association of School Counselors (CASC) in recognition of the school's outstanding counseling program, which is data-driven and closely aligned with the American School Counselor Association's National Model, making a significant impact on student success.
According to CASC, "Greenfield Middle School stands out for its commitment to student well-being and its proactive strategies to tackle critical challenges such as chronic absenteeism and academic performance. Since earning Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) status in 2022, the school has been persistent in collecting and analyzing data to set largescale student outcomes. Their comprehensive interventions, including targeted lessons, events, and small group sessions, have created an equitable and supportive learning environment for all students."
CASC specifically highlighted the school's innovative Restore and Repair Center, designed to provide restorative, trauma-informed alternatives to traditional suspensions. The initiative has successfully reduced overall and repeat suspensions, contributing to a more positive and inclusive school culture. By integrating social and emotional learning standards and engaging guidance technicians, Greenfield Middle School has cultivated a nurturing school climate. The results are evident in the significant reduction of chronic absenteeism and suspensions. The program's success serves as an inspiring model for other schools across California, demonstrating the profound impact of comprehensive and compassionate student support systems.
"As we look to our North Star of decreasing poverty and increasing belongingness, schools like Greenfield Middle stand out as exemplars in creating spaces where all students feel welcome," said San Diego County Office of Education Counseling Coordinator Tanya Bulette. "We commend the school for their work and this great recognition from a statewide organization."
In addition to the school's recognition, Jacob Launder, principal of Greenfield Middle School, has been honored with the CASC Administrator of the Year Award. Principal Launder is highly regarded for his unwavering support of the school counseling team and their pursuit of the RAMP designation. One of his most notable contributions, called out by CASC, is the creation of an innovative onboarding process for new students, which he personally led. The process ensures that students transitioning to Greenfield Middle School feel welcomed and supported from day one, offering them opportunities to meet teachers, tour the school, and build connections with peers, fostering a strong sense of belonging.
