Grossmont Union Tech Specialist Named County Classified School Employee of the Year

Grossmont Union Tech Specialist Named County Classified School Employee of the Year
Gloria Ciriza poses with Lenny DAngelo

The work Lenny D'Angelo does at Santana High School in Santee highlights how much impact one person can have at a school by sharing their expertise and believing in students.

Because of all he brings to the school and the community, D’Angelo is the 2025-26 San Diego County Classified School Employee of the Year.

“Hearing about the difference that Lenny D’Angelo is making in his school community and with students is such an inspiration,” said Dr. Gloria E. Ciriza, San Diego County superintendent of schools. “The many ways he connects with and supports students make him a great example of why classified school employees are so vital.”

Dr. Ciriza surprised D'Angelo with the news April 23 at Santana High School.

As a technology specialist with the Grossmont Union High School District, he manages the hardware and software systems at Santana High, minimizing disruptions to learning.

“Lenny is an incredible asset to our campus,” said Jetta Odenkirk, manager of school facilities at Santana High School. “He is always willing to go above and beyond to support others, never hesitating to stop what he is doing to lend a helping hand. His vast knowledge and dedication make him an invaluable resource. His willingness to assist anyone in need truly sets him apart.”

In addition to keeping the technology in peak condition, D’Angelo supports students and colleagues in many other ways.

He frequently offers training sessions to staff members on new technologies, empowering them to use the tools effectively in the classroom. As the announcer at school baseball games, he creates a vibrant atmosphere for the whole community. He directly supports students through his involvement with the school’s robotics club, helping to foster teamwork, problem solving, and innovation. By overseeing the school’s alarm system and coordinating safety drills, he plays a crucial role in keeping students and staff members safe. He also helps keep parents and the community informed with updates on social media and the school’s website.

“Lenny’s willingness to contribute his skills and time beyond his job responsibilities demonstrates a rare dedication to the school and community,” Principal Brian Wilbur said. “His involvement in these activities enriches the educational experience and helps create lasting connections among students, families, and the community.”

For decades, the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) has recognized classified school employees from across the region for their commitment to providing safe, enriching environments for our students. Every year, classified employees representing all 42 county districts are invited to apply for San Diego County Classified School Employee of the Year.

D'Angelo said he was surprised and honored by the recognition.

"There are a lot of quality classified school employees who are part of this," he said, "and I can't believe that I'm the one."
