The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts.
Due to ongoing safety concerns related to the Border 2 Fire, Arroyo Vista, Camarena, Eastlake, Liberty, Marshall, Olympic View, Salt Creek, and Wolf Canyon elementary schools in the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) will be closed Jan. 24. All other CVESD schools remain open but on rainy day schedule due to poor air quality.
The following schools will also be closed due to the Border 2 Fire:
- Eastlake High, Eastlake Middle, Olympian High, and East Hills Academy (Sweetwater Union High School District)
- High Tech High Chula Vista
- Arroyo Vista Charter School
Due to power outages, schools in the following districts will be closed Jan. 24:
- Borrego Springs Unified School District
- Dehesa School District
- Mountain Empire Unified School District
- Warner Unified School District

Nearly 80 school-site winners competed at countywide bee, and after 23 rounds of spelling and vocabulary challenges, Benjamin Reinhard from Maranatha Christian School is the new countywide spelling bee champion.

Nearly 200 guests gathered at Marina Village to celebrate school social workers and the school social work profession at the annual awards program hosted by the San Diego County Office of Education.

Forty-three San Diego County schools have been recognized as 2026 Purple Star Schools by the California Department of Education. In total, 107 schools now have the designation, which is good for three years.

SDCOE will honor school social workers and recognize the school social work profession at its annual awards ceremony March 6.

Parents and caregivers can learn about tools and strategies to support their children with mental health challenges through a free series from SDCOE and Transforming Mental Health Initiative at Rady Children’s Health experts. The virtual series runs from Feb. 4 to March 18.
