JCCS Schools Recognized for PBIS Practices

JCCS Schools Recognized for PBIS Practices

Multiple San Diego County Office of Education juvenile court and community schools were recently recognized by the state of California for their practices in positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).

“This achievement is a powerful milestone in our journey toward building classrooms that are positive, inclusive, and responsive,” said Roberto Carrillo, executive director for Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS). “We celebrate the people, relationships, and teamwork that shape a positive school culture. Congratulations to all who made this recognition possible.”

The recognition is given out by California PBIS, a statewide organization that helps educational partners build capacity to implement PBIS practices.

In general, PBIS emphasizes four integrated elements: (a) data for decision-making, (b) measurable outcomes supported and evaluated by data, (c) practices with evidence that these outcomes are achievable, and (d) systems that efficiently and effectively support implementation of these practices.

Across JCCS, site teams continually review and assess data, and adapt to what works best for students. JCCS’s South Region is using restorative practices as an alternative to suspension. Students will take a break from the group setting to have a check in with the school counselor or school social worker and give them the opportunity to do schoolwork at school rather than being suspended. In addition, the school will engage in restorative conversations with the students, host community circles, and restorative conferences with students and families if needed.

The Center on PBIS defines PBIS as a framework for creating safe, positive, equitable schools, where every student can feel valued, connected to the school community and supported by caring adults. By implementing evidence-based practices within a PBIS framework, schools support their students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success, engage with families to create locally-meaningful and culturally-relevant outcomes, and use data to make informed decisions that improve the way things work for everyone.
