La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) is entering into a new partnership with the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) to offer an enrichment program that focuses on mariachi music and ballet folklórico through SDUSD’s PrimeTime Extended Day Program.

The PrimeTime Extended Day Program provides elementary and middle school students with a fun and engaging learning environment after school during the hours most parents/guardians are working.

La Jolla Music Society has become a PrimeTime Partner organization, and 10 schools selected its enrichment program for the spring 2025 semester: Boone Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Franklin Elementary School, Golden Hill Elementary School, Grant TK–8 School, John Muir Language Academy, Juarez Elementary School, Kimbrough Elementary School (two programs), Marvin Elementary School, and Normal Heights Elementary School. The program is set to launch the week of Feb. 24.

LJMS’ enrichment program is 10 weeks long and two instructors will visit each school site two times a week. Students will choose to participate in either mariachi or ballet folklórico for the full program. They will learn traditional songs and dances, along with history, and the program will culminate in a performance alongside either a professional mariachi or Mariachi Aguila, LJMS’ student mariachi group from the organization’s Community Music Center.

Ukuleles will be provided to the music students so that they can learn a new instrument as they learn the songs, and skirts will be provided for the dance students. LJMS will provide six part-time instructors for the program.

“The PrimeTime program allows us to reach a broader set of students, providing quality music instruction and education in these important cultural traditions,” says Allison Boles, director of learning and engagement for La Jolla Music Society. “We’re excited to partner with the San Diego Unified School District to share the love of music and dance performance with students from all walks of life.”

La Jolla Music Society’s award-winning educational programs provide unmatched access and learning opportunities to more than 11,000 students and community members throughout San Diego County annually. With learning and engagement at the heart of our mission, LJMS works closely with each visiting artist and ensemble to create outreach activities that highlight their unique talents and expertise at both The Conrad and in the community.

La Jolla Music Society has operated its afterschool music program, the Community Music Center (CMC), for over 25 years. Based in Logan Heights at the Logan Memorial Educational Campus, the CMC is designed to increase students’ self-confidence and resilience, while providing a safe and equitable environment for studying and creating music.
