PASS AmeriCorps Members Volunteer at Food Distribution Event

PASS AmeriCorps Members Volunteer at Food Distribution Event

PASS AmeriCorps members spent time this past Sunday volunteering at a food distribution event hosted by the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank held at Snapdragon Stadium to help San Diego families being impacted by the delay in food benefits and the government shutdown.

“I met several individuals who shared how thankful they were to receive help, especially during challenging times like these,” said PASS member Rose Guillaume. “I assisted at the walk-up booth and helped distribute produce to families. I also had the chance to translate for community members who did not speak English, ensuring they felt welcomed and supported.”

More than 30 PASS AmeriCorps members and two program staff spent close to five hours providing traffic control support at the food distribution drive-through, which handed out 53,000 meals to county residents.

“We’re honored to be part of this important effort and grateful for the opportunity to serve our community during this time of need,” said Monica Quiroz, program specialist for the PASS AmeriCorps program at SDCOE.

As the federal government shutdown delays food benefits for millions of California families, Governor Gavin Newsom recently authorized the deployment of the California National Guard and California Service Corps members on a humanitarian mission to support food banks statewide.

“Serving at the emergency food bank was a truly heartwarming experience,” said PASS member Ashleigh Henderson. “Helping guide families through the drive-through distribution made me realize how even the smallest acts like offering a smile or a wave can make a real difference in someone’s day. That was evidence of positive impact. That's what drives me to serve,” she said.

All PASS AmeriCorps members who participated may count their hours toward their AmeriCorps term of service and will receive special recognition upon graduation for crisis response.

For any students and families in need of support, SDCOE has compiled a list of resources that include food distribution information and other health resources.
