Resources to Teach Indigenous Peoples' Day

Resources to Teach Indigenous Peoples' Day

On Indigenous Peoples' Day and every day, we work to honor the cultures and celebrate the contributions of indigenous peoples. California is home to large and diverse populations of indigenous peoples and it's vital our American Indian students are supported and included in access to resources so they can thrive in school and in life.

California is home to 109 federally recognized tribes, more than 70 non-federally-recognized tribes, and three of the nation's largest Urban Indian communities in San Diego County, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles County. The state has 30,282 students who identify as American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) students. The majority of the AIAN students attend public school classrooms on tribal lands and in urban centers.

This week, the San Diego County Board of Education will endorse Indigenous Peoples' Day at its regular meeting on Oct. 11. View the proposed resolution.

SDCOE partners with state organizations on the California Indian Education for All website, which has resources to help educators provide students access to culturally relevant and respectful learning experiences related to Indigenous Peoples' Day and every day.

Find on-demand learning courses, live webinars, and a book list to assist educators and families in choosing high-quality, Indigenous authored books.

SDCOE facilitated a discussion with local American Indian students to learn more about their experiences in school. Our young people shared stories of negative stereotypes, sports drills with "Indian" names, and being the butt of jokes among friends. Their experiences also included feeling like they can't share their culture in school beyond a day of recognition and the sense of staff members not being sensitive to Native religious practices. Watch the student experience panel recording

The SDCOE Equity Blueprint for Action was designed with the voices of our students and community members with recommendations and practices that focus on improving educational outcomes for three student groups: African American, American Indian, and Latinx.
