Santa Signs with Students at Davila Day School

Santa Signs with Students at Davila Day School

The level of excitement at Davila Day School was about as big as Santa’s belly as they waited for their special visitor.

And what made the visit even more special is that Santa used American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate — just like many of the Davila students. All of the students at Davila are Deaf or hard-of-hearing and use either spoken language, ASL, or a combination of both to communicate.

The students, dressed in pajamas, gathered in the central area of the specialized school with their teachers, paraprofessionals, parent volunteers, and community members.

Davila Day School Principal Cheryl Kaler brought in a note that Santa couldn’t find his Elf. The students then did a scavenger hunt, following clues that led to finding the Elf stuck in the chimney! With some mischief and magic, out popped a real Elf with Santa right behind!

Santa talked with the kids about the holidays, then greeted each child by name and handed them a gift chosen specifically for them. After each child received their gift and posed for a picture with Santa, they counted down and opened the gifts.

The gifts were donated by San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) employees and other community members. Students also received a book with a Deaf/hard-of-hearing character in support of the school’s efforts to increase student literacy and self-esteem.

“The spirit of the holidays is a time to love, share, and recognize ourselves as a unique community. This event isn’t possible without our South County SELPA and SDCOE staff, it really exemplifies our communities lifting up our students. Thank you!”  said Itinerant Teacher Alexandra Meza.

The team of elves who helped coordinate the event included Kaler, Meza, Jackie Korfin, and many other staff members who assisted.

Davila Day School is a special education school located in Chula Vista that serves preschool through 6th grade students from neighborhoods in South and East counties.
