Student Spotlight: Ashley

Student Spotlight: Ashley

The Juvenile Court and Community Schools student representative on the San Diego County Board of Education in January was Ashley, a junior at Monarch School.

Ashley was selected for her outstanding leadership qualities and academic excellence. She mentors and teaches reading techniques to younger students as part of the High School Buddies program and consistently leads by example, showing compassion for those around her. Outside of the classroom, Ashley is a starter in volleyball where she helped last year’s team reach the championship game.

“Ashley is an amazing person who is dedicated to making a difference not only in her life, but in the lives of all those that she interacts with,” said Principal Ruben Baeza. “She is a purpose-driven student leader who consistently sets the bar high academically, socially, and personally,” he said.

Her leadership and compassion shine through in the advice she offers to other students to never give up.

“Keep your goals in mind even during difficult times,” she said. “Believe that your goals and dreams will become a reality.”

Ashley hopes to follow her own dreams toward a four-year college, preferably U.C. Davis, to study science and anesthesiology and ultimately graduate school at the University of Colorado.

Ashley credits the support of her teachers, Ms. Rubio and Ms. Perkins, in helping her build confidence and belief in herself, demonstrating the powerful impact of strong relationships within the Monarch School community.

As part of its efforts to highlight transformational learning experiences for students, the San Diego County Board of Education recognizes a student from Juvenile Court and Community Schools at its regular monthly meeting.
