Student Spotlight: Elliana

Student Spotlight: Elliana

The Juvenile Court and Community Schools student representative on the San Diego County Board of Education in February was Elliana, a sophomore at SOUL Academy.

In just under a year at the school, Elliana has shown great leadership and perseverance. She is enrolled in college courses and received her driver’s permit through the drivers’ education course at school. She is the PBIS student representative and serves as president of the school’s Bring Change 2 Mind club where she supports students’ social and emotional learning and efforts to reduce the stigma around mental health.

“This role has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and taught me how to lead with empathy and understanding, strengthened my ability to support my peers, and helped me see the world from different perspectives,” Elliana said at the board meeting

Elliana moved to San Diego 10 months ago from Florida to live with her sisters in hopes of finding better opportunities. She said it was a decision “that saved her life.” She thanked her sisters for pushing her and helping her grow into a better version of herself.

“Their sacrifices, guidance, and unconditional support have meant everything to me,” she said.

While maintaining focus on her academics, outside of school Elliana just started a job at Chuck-E-Cheese and a hair styling business via social media. After graduation, she wants to attend college and get a degree in psychology while also pursuing her interests in cosmetology.

“I want a better understanding of people’s emotions, thoughts, and mental well-being so that I can dedicate my life to helping others feel heard, supported, and seen during their most difficult times,” she said. “At the same time, I also have a passion for cosmetology, helping people feel confident through hair and beauty is something that brings me genuine joy.”

She is grateful to teacher Wendy Aja and counselor Jessica Pena, who have helped her excel academically and socially. She says they have helped her become more focused on her schoolwork and more open and comfortable in school and with making new friends.

“What I admire about Elliana is that she is always inclusive and wants everyone to participate,” Pena said. “She reaches out to new students and makes sure they are included.”

Elliana said that she has experienced more growth and opportunity at SOUL Academy than ever before.

“The principal, teachers, counselors, and staff at SOUL Academy generally care about student success,” she said. “They challenge us academically while also supporting us personally.”

As part of its efforts to highlight transformational learning experiences for students, the San Diego County Board of Education recognizes a student from Juvenile Court and Community Schools at its regular monthly meeting.
