Student Spotlight: Elliot

Student Spotlight: Elliot

The Juvenile Court and Community Schools student representative on the San Diego County Board of Education for June was Elliot, a senior at Monarch School.

Principal Dyane Plumly shared with the board that Elliot, who has been at Monarch since kindergarten, has shown immense growth in the past few years. Elliot was nominated by all six of his Monarch teachers, who said he is optimistic, funny, insightful, committed to his success, cares about other people, and is a very good friend.

“All of the teachers at Monarch are very proud of Elliot and tonight is a testament to that,” Plumly said.

Elliot recently received several scholarships, including from The Black College Expo, The San Diego Foundation, and the Downtown San Diego Lions Club. The senior plans to attend Southwestern Community College and transfer to a four-year university to study business. He hopes to one day own his own demolition company.

Elliot is grateful to his science teacher, Misty Perkins, who he says he’s able to talk to and get advice from. Based on his own experiences, he advises other JCCS students to “build relationships with their teachers.”

Elliot thanked the Board of Education and shared with the audience that attending Monarch helped strengthen his two favorite hobbies – art and soccer.

Each month, the San Diego County Board of Education recognizes a student from Juvenile Court and Community Schools at its regular meeting.
