Student Spotlights: Sofia and Abdul
The Juvenile Court and Community Schools student representatives on the San Diego County Board of Education for April and May were Sofia, a sophomore at South County Community School, and Abdul, a senior at San Pasqual Academy.
Sofia was selected as the student representative because of her dedication to her studies, her work as a lifeguard for young children, and her persistence in achieving her goals.
“She is a leader amongst her peer and demonstrates a commitment to personal development and academic excellence,” said Principal Floyd North. “Teachers report Sofia is a calming and joyful spirit on campus. In class, she’s focused, collaborative, and willing to take risks in her learning.”
Sofia highlighted that the teachers and wellness team have been incredible emotional supports for her during tough times and have given her the encouragement to strive for excellence every day.
She encourages other students to focus on graduation and never give up. She plans to pursue cosmetology or fashion design after graduation.
Abdul was recognized for academic achievement and participation in his school community.
“Abdul is always willing to try new things and never quits once he starts,” shared the staff at San Pasqual Academy.
He is a multisport athlete who has participated in soccer, football, basketball, golf, and track. Off the field, he is a member of the Voices of the Dragon Leadership team and ASB, and is a student intern working at the agriculture field and in the school cafeteria.
He is also involved with community service with Outside the Lens Program Bench Project and student photographer for the yearbook and San Pasqual community.
Abdul plans to go to college to study kinesiology and become a physical therapist.
Each month, the San Diego County Board of Education recognizes a student from Juvenile Court and Community Schools at its regular meeting.
