Black and white checkered flags fluttered in the breeze as students and their color-coordinated teams waited at the starting line for the annual Friendship School Wheel-A-Thon. Principal Rachel Page gave the “go” sign, and they were off. Teachers, staff, and volunteers from San Diego County Office of Education clapped, shook pom poms, and waved custom signs to encourage students as they rounded the track.

The fund- and fun-raising event for the Imperial Beach special education school, now in its 16th year, raised more than $3,000 to provide students with multiple, severe disabilities and health impairments the tools and resources they need.

Friendship School’s annual Wheel-A-Thon raised more than $3000 to support programs and services for children with disabilities and health impairments.

“This annual tradition not only allows us to purchase exciting items like our new fiber optic sensory light for the multi-sensory environment, but also helps fund our yearbook program, ensuring that each family receives a meaningful keepsake of their child’s experience at what we truly believe is a very special place to learn,” said Page.

This year, 24 student teams participated, completing a total of 573 laps. Jerry completed the highest number at 44, and his room 17 team completed the most laps as a group. Students smiled, waved, and posed for selfies with supporters at the festive event, which included upbeat tunes from a DJ and Friendship School branded items.

Ensuring students and families participate in many of the traditional school experiences — such as yearbooks, prom, and school fundraisers — fosters inclusivity and belonging and contributes to the vibrant community at Friendship School.
