Emergency Planning Tools for Families

Emergency Planning Tools for Families

When a natural disaster or emergency occurs, parents or guardians may be unable to pick up or care for their child after school. If this happens, it’s important the school has contact information for trusted adults who can pick up and care for your child.

If local educational agency personnel become aware that a student’s parent or guardian is not available to provide care for the student, California law requires that the school first follow the parental instructions relating to the student’s care detailed in the emergency contact information provided by the parent or guardian, according to Attorney General guidance.

Families must be prepared for situations where one parent or both parents are unable to pick up their children in the event of an emergency, including being detained or deported. Below are some tools designed to help families prepare for an emergency.

Most importantly, make sure your trusted adults have the information they need to pick up and care for your child. And without worrying them, assure your children that they will be taken care of if for some reason you are unable to care for them, even for a short time. Let them know who will care for them until you can.

Family Safety Plan

This Family Safety Plan in English and Spanish helps parents/guardians create an emergency child care plan to be enacted if they are ever separated from their children. It also provides important guidance for immigrant families on their constitutional rights and how to find trusted immigration services in their community.

There are printed copies of the Family Safety Plan at your school site.

Personal Disaster Plan

The County of San Diego provides instructions on how to create your own Personal Disaster Plan (available in 12 languages) and the American Red Cross offers guidelines on how to create an Emergency Preparedness Plan for multiple disaster types in just three steps.
