Comics and Graphic Novels in the Classroom

MARCH photo book club

Learn more about SDCOE's presence and ways to engage at Comic-Con 2023 as well as year-round educational opportunities.

Incorporating comics and graphic novels into the curriculum increases engagement and access for all students while developing a love for learning (and secretly powering up literacy skills). Join educators from across the San Diego region as we work to incorporate comics and graphic novels as a means to address rigorous grade level standards across disciplines and grade levels.

QUESTIONING STRATEGIES

Check out our bookmark focused on questioning strategies for before, during and after reading. These questions are designed to encourage deeper thinking, and are aligned to the CCR Anchor Standards for Reading.

ABOUT THE EDUCATOR COMIC-CON BOOK CLUB GROUP

Grow your ability to teach using comic books and graphic novels through a new collaboration between the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE), San Diego Comic-Con International, and the San Diego Comic-Con Museum. The SDCOE Educator Graphic Novel Book Club aims to increase your exposure to great reads, interesting conversations, positive collaboration, and a sense of community.

The SDCOE Educator Group meets monthly at the SDCOE main campus, but there may be additional book club branches opening up in the region based on interest.

Through popular vote, members choose each month’s book based on suggestions from club members. Discussions are facilitated by club members with SDCOE curriculum and instruction experts available to offer guidance on research-based best practices.

Teachers of any discipline and counselors interested in using comic books and graphic novels to engage students will benefit from this learning and networking opportunity. You might already teach using these types of resources, or you might be interested in exploring the possibilities.

Go to the google form at tinyurl.com/EducatorGroup to join the interest list!
