Based on the latest guidance on mass gatherings from the California Department of Public Health, the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Union-Tribune have made the decision to cancel the event.
At this point, the guidance from state health officials is clear – any non-essential gathering should be postponed or canceled to protect public health and slow the rate of transmission of COVID-19.
The San Diego County Office of Education team is prioritizing the health and safety of our county's students and families in making this difficult decision. E.W. Scripps, the national organization, is not issuing refunds to registered schools.
The San Diego Union-Tribune Countywide Spelling Bee is open to 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students in a public or private school with a combined enrollment of 30 or more children. The overall winner of the countywide Spelling Bee will be awarded the title of Spelling Bee Champion, and will win an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the 2020 Scripps National Spelling Bee in National Harbor, Md. in May.
