Assessment
The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) promotes the use of data to make instructional decisions and monitor student progress. Our staff is available to help schools analyze assessment results, implement best practices in data management, and create structures and processes for identifying strategies that address teaching and learning. SDCOE also provides support and assistance to help districts with implementing balanced assessment systems which include formative, interim and summative assessment.

Balanced assessment
A system where tools, methodologies, and data systems inform decision-makers such as administrators on learning decisions.
Formative assessment
Often referred to as assessment for learning, this is a process teachers and students use during instruction that provides feedback to adjust ongoing teaching moves and learning tactics.
Summative Assessment
Also referred to as long-cycle assessment, this is the assessment of learning at a particular point in time and typically have higher stakes for the student and/or teacher.
