Equity Library
We consistently hear from students that they want to see more diverse perspectives and examples of positive contributions — from their cultures and others — in their classrooms and curriculum. Students want to be seen and understood as they seek to see and understand others.
In an effort to provide schools and students with books that feature stories and characters of different backgrounds and experiences in an age-appropriate manner, we have compiled a selection of titles that have been recommended by educators or have received national recognition.
Educational equity is a core focus at the San Diego County Office of Education, because it means each student has access, opportunities, and supports to thrive in school -- that includes celebrating, honoring and welcoming diversity. Check out the SDCOE Equity Blueprint for Action for more practices for an inclusive campus.
These books are not meant to be exhaustive, nor is their inclusion an endorsement of a particular political viewpoint. You know your community best and which resources to share and how.
