The Spanish language development standards can be used to plan instruction and assessment for students new to Spanish, or to integrate language learning with Spanish language arts and other subject matter.

SLD Professional Learning Opportunities

Professional learning on the standards is available from SDCOE in partnership with the California Reading and Literacy Project. Intended learning intentions for the professional learning sessions include:

• Recognizing the links between language development and language arts standards
• Understanding the structure, use, and value of the SLD standards
• Identifying strengths of model lessons for integrated and designated SLD
• Connecting the SLD standards to content areas and texts to be taught in Spanish

SDCOE has created a standards-based publication that lists 408 Spanish titles that were hand selected by two-way Spanish immersion grade-level teachers. This easy-to-read document is tabbed by grade level and lists book titles by content area (language arts, science, mathematics, social studies, and additional read-alouds).

For each title, an author, publisher, ISBN #, and topic/theme are given.

The SDCOE Multilingual Education and Global Achievement (MEGA), and Innovation teams have collaborated to design distance learning units of study in Spanish for grades K-3 that are focused on grade level essential learnings in each content area. These units were purposefully designed to integrate content, provide flexibility and choice. The units of study connect content in the following areas: ELA/SLA, mathematics, science, history/social science, arts, computer science, and physical education through integrated study. Assessment opportunities (formative and summative) and student feedback are embedded and intentionally developed. These open-source units are being developed in Google to ensure maximum flexibility for districts to use them with their preferred distance learning instructional platform.
