The 9th Grade Improvement Network (SD9UP) aims to transform the high school experience for historically marginalized students by focusing on key drivers such as strong adult-student relationships, adult teaming, effective 8th to 9th grade transitions, equitable grading practices, and optimized site schedules. The initiative seeks to change the trajectory toward higher high school graduation rates and increased college access.

The network addresses the significant achievement gaps faced by historically marginalized students, particularly during the critical transition from middle to high school. Students from historically marginalized backgrounds often struggle with lower academic performance and engagement, leading to higher dropout rates and reduced college enrollment opportunities. The initiative exists to provide targeted support and systemic changes to improve these outcomes.

The primary target audience includes 9th grade students from historically marginalized backgrounds, educators, school administrators, and support staff within the participating schools. These groups are targeted because they are directly involved in or impacted by the students' academic journey and can influence the implementation of effective strategies to support student success.

The primary goal is to increase the percentage of 9th grade students who are "on track" for high school graduation. Specific aims include improving GPA scores, reducing the number of D/F grades in core subjects like English language arts and math, and fostering better student-teacher relationships. For example, one of the aims is to increase the percentage of on-track students at Lincoln High from 74% to 90% by the end of each quarter.

Participants will engage in a series of sessions, including:

  • Eight structured sessions that focus on setting aims, applying change ideas, and continuous improvement processes
  • Team collaboration and planning time
  • Implementation of the Kid Talk protocol and other support structures
  • Continuous support and feedback loops through data collection and analysis

Members of the network are expected to actively participate in sessions, engage in data collection and analysis, implement change ideas in their respective roles, and contribute to continuous improvement discussions. They are also committed to maintaining a focus on the success of focal student groups identified through the network's data.

The network emphasizes reflective practices and sharing of lessons learned. Testimonials and success stories are collected from participants to showcase the impact of the initiative. Results include increased student engagement, improved academic performance, and a stronger sense of community within schools.
