SDCOE K-12 Comprehensive Health Education Grant

Grant Funding Background and Focus

Recently the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) was named as a recipient of $2 million in funding from the San Diego County COVID-19 Health Disparities Project to support and expand SDCOE’s work to improve the health literacy of San Diego County students. Health-literate students can understand basic health information, directions, and services needed to make informed personal health decisions, which can contribute to healthier communities. As health issues continue to evolve, students need a safe space where they can get the tools to make healthy decisions.

The majority of the funding will be distributed to districts and charter schools as grant awards to build students' understanding of essential concepts and develop skills that empower them to analyze influences, access valid information, communicate, make informed decisions, set goals, practice health-enhancing behaviors, and participate in health promotion. Instruction will be guided by the California Health Education Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve so that students learn to think critically, communicate, and problem-solve health issues in any of the following health education content areas:

  • Nutrition and Physical Activity
  • Mental, Social, and Emotional Health
  • Growth, Development, and Sexual Health
  • Injury Prevention and Safety
  • Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
  • Personal and Community Health

See the pull-down menu below for specific details including eligibility requirements, levels of funding, contract requirements, and application process.

UPDATE: SDCOE was recently notified that K-12 Comprehensive Health Education Funding from San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would be extended for an additional six months and that SDCOE will receive an additional of $500K of funding, for a total of $2.5 million.  This webpage has been updated to reflect changes resulting from the expanded timeline and funding.  Please contact Paige Metz at pmetz@sdcoe.net if you have questions.
