Environmental Literacy

​The San Diego County Office of Education Environmental Literacy Team offers a variety of events and professional learning opportunities to help educators learn about the CA Environmental Principles and Concepts (EP&Cs), connect the EP&Cs to all content areas, and use environmental literacy as a tool to bring culturally relevant instruction to classrooms. Services provided include support planning instruction with an environmental literacy lens, identifying local environmental phenomena to use in conjunction with adopted curriculum, and developing the capacity of educators related to environmental literacy.


Professional Learning Opportunities

Phenomena Design – The Geophysics of Io

Learn Io’s movements and changes in shape from a Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist and collaborate to develop an activity that applies the ideas of Io to a student activity related to High School Performance Expectations.

Learning in Local Nature

This one day virtual professional learning will focus on environmental literacy in science and how to take your students outdoors. Identify local environmental phenomena and get tips on connecting with community partners. Learn from experts in the field and collaborate with other classroom educators from across Southern California.

Launching Environmental Literacy Lessons Using Culturally Relevant Phenomena for Secondary Science Educators

This virtual professional learning series will focus on environmental literacy and climate science and change. We will also connect the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and Career Technical Education to the California Environmental Principles and Concepts (EP&Cs). We further aim to connect students with culturally relevant local phenomena to engage in science. Come and learn from experts in the field and collaborate with fellow educators to develop instructional resources for your classroom.

Audience: Southern California 9-12 Science and CTE Teachers 
                  (The following counties are included: Imperial, Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange,  
                   Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego)
