 Southwest High Wins Record 5th Straight San Diego County Academic Decathlon

​Southwest High School was crowned with its record-breaking fifth straight San Diego County Academic Decathlon Championship Tuesday night at the 25th annual awards ceremony at University of San Diego.

Southwest High coach Ken Boulton, who announced at the conclusion of the awards that this was his last Decathlon team, commended all the student participants, and thanked the County Office of Education and Mission Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the event.

More than 150 students from 17 local high schools took part in the February 3 competition, which was conducted for the first time at San Diego High School. Southwest edged Eastlake High for the championship, with Fallbrook High finishing third. The entire top ten was made up of:

  1. Southwest High, Sweetwater Union High School District
  2. Eastlake High, Sweetwater UHSD
  3. Fallbrook, Fallbrook Union HSD
  4. Our Lady of Peace, parochial
  5. Saint Augustine, parochial
  6. Hilltop, Sweetwater UHSD
  7. Sweetwater, Sweetwater UHSD
  8. Mission Hills, San Marcos Unified School District
  9. Mar Vista, Sweetwater UHSD
  10. San Ysidro, Sweetwater UHSD

Both Ward and Aguilar commended the students, teachers and parents, and said they looked forward to the day when students excelling in academic competition were accorded the same recognition as athletes.

Southwest will now represent San Diego County in the California Academic Decathlon Championship, to be held March 15-18.
