Torrey Pines High is the new San Diego County Academic League Champion, topping Southwest High 62-47 in the title match, which was televised live from the County Office of Education on ITV Ch. 16.
"I couldn't be more proud of my students," said Torrey Pines coach Nona Killmer, moments after the final buzzer. "They have worked very hard all year and have a stellar future ahead."
Earlier on the same day, the four contenders for this year's championship squared off in semi-final match-ups, with Torrey topping La Jolla High in one semi-final and Southwest beating Valhalla High in the other. Both semi-finals and the Torrey-Southwest finale will be re-aired on ITV:
Torrey Pines-Southwest Championship: May 4 at 11 pm. May 6 at 2 pm, May 6 at 8 pm, May 24 at 7 pm, June 9 at 10 am and June 10 at 8 pm.
Valhalla-Southwest Semi-Final: May 10 at 7 pm, May 11 at 11 pm, and May 13 at 2 pm and 8 pm.
Torrey Pines-La Jolla Semi-Final: May 17 at 7 pm, May 18 at 11 pm, and May 20 at 2 pm and 8 pm.
In the championship match, Torrey Pines' five-member team began their celebration with 38 seconds to go. With the victory nearly in-hand, team members Brian Alford, Michael Chen, Ryan Chuang, Jenny Tan and Alex Warburton let their emotions fly.
Southwest coach Ken Boulton, who has built an academic competition dynasty at the Sweetwater Union High School District campus, said, "We didn't play as I would have hoped, especially at the beginning of the game, but I am very proud of my students. Torrey Pines did a great job in today's game."
Southwest has won the last five San Diego County Academic Decathlon championships, and been dominant in Academic League competitions, too.
